“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” – Psalm 46:1
I remember the gut-wrenching feeling when I heard the news that we had to disconnect my father-in-law from the machine that was keeping him alive. There was nothing else the doctors could do for him. The way my mother-in-law screamed in that hospital room, the way my husband held on to me, the way I felt disconnected from my own body — all of it is still so vivid in my memory. In that season of grieving and suffering, I learned the true meaning of finding refuge in God. I came across Psalm 46:1 and realized that in the midst of my pain, I could either hide from God or invite Him into my pain and find refuge in Him. The Hebrew word for "refuge" refers to a shelter from storms and danger. This means that it's not about the trial itself but about the One in whom we seek shelter when we're in the middle of the storm. Some people run to the shelter of alcohol, drugs, relationships, sex, or even social media to numb the pain. But none of those things will ever provide true safety — only God's presence can do that. So friend, today, I invite you to sit in God's presence and find refuge in Him as you go through this storm. He is there, waiting to embrace you, protect you, and give you strength as you walk through this.
Dear Heavenly Father, I pray for anyone going through a difficult season. I declare that as they find refuge in you you meet them where they're at. I pray that your presence will comfort them. That your love and peace would overwhelm their heart in such a beautiful way. That in the middle of the suffering they get to know you more and get closer to you. In Jesus name, amen!
